The first bell rings, warning stragglers that the day has begun, breaking up conversations about weekend events, starting a long day of classes. ROUTINE.
The classroom seems unbearably dull; a place where time seems to stand still. There are sleep-inducing lec- tures, brain-racking tests, yet it is here that a child matures and gains a world of knowledge. EDUCATION.
The people — white, black, brown, red — learn to work together while looking for separate identities. Each person is an important part of Bluestone. INDI- VIDUALS.
6 Student Life
The Lunch break provides 25 minutes away from the stress and strain of learning. This is time to rest the mind in the company of friends. RELAXATION.
The afternoon comes. For most students only two more periods remain. Time moves slowly. — The hands of the clock seem to creep forward. ANTICIPATION.
The 3:00 bell releases a suddenly enthusiastic and energetic group of students, who anxiously head for home. FREEDOM.
Daytime worries are forgotten; plans are made for the evening. Freedom will last until tomorrow, when the routine will begin again. LIFE.

The juniors held the traditional Jr. Sr. prom on May 8, 1976.
Members of the class had worked all week to transform the gym with colorful artwork which carried out the theme. Island Para- dise. "Secret Sauce" provided the music for this occasion.
Students that attended the prom had mixed feelings about its suc- cess. Many thought it was one of the greatest nights of the year; oth- ers thought that the prom was a great let down.
Disappointed students com- mented:
"The band wasn't any good."
"The background for pictures didn't match the theme."
"It was not light enough in the gym."
"It wasn't as great as I had al- ways heard."
Pleased students commented:
"The band was the best ever."
"The decorations were very color- ful."
"The food was delicious!"
"It was just what I had thought a prom should be."
"The punch should have been spiked."
Even though the prom wasn't enjoyed by all, the juniors consid- ered it a success. They now look forward to the prom they would be given next year.

"Hello — Bluestone Sr. High School."
"There's a bomb in the school. It will go off in 30 minutes.”
This was the context of a phone call received by Mrs. Linda Ferrell on Nov. 11, 1976 at 10:18 A.M. She immediately rang the fire alarm and students, teachers and all other personnel rapidly evacuated the buildings. They were told to proceed to the parking lot. Most of the students remained there for over two hours in the cold wind.
There were 45 terrified students who proceeded in their states of madness to leave school. They returned the following day to learn of their consequences. They were faced with such trials as zero's in the classes they had missed.
In time lost through the two hour idleness, the coun- ty lost $1200. This figures includes the idle time of teachers, cafeteria workers and office and guidance per- sonnel. It also includes the time it took for the state police, sheriffs and county people to clear the school for re-entrance.

Golden Link
Enthusiasm was overwhelming this year for the Golden Link staff, well, for a few loyal members any- way. The students who worked dur- ing classtime in Photo journalism, after school and on weekends to meet deadlines should be com- mended. The Golden Link had many difficulties making the final deadline because of weather con- ditions beyond their control.
The publishing of the yearbook was new to a majority of the Staff, but with the aid of Melinda Smith, Editor, and Mr. Conner, sponsor, they made endless layouts, multi- tudes of pictures and pages of copy for the Golden Link.
Monitor Off to a Slow Start
Due to the local competition between newspapers, the Blue- stone's Monitor was slow in start- ing. After countless efforts by the club's sponsor, Mrs. Talley, the problem was solved with a mail-off company that does nothing but print school newspapers. This company is Hartco Inc. in Pennsyl- vania. The copies on the paper have decreased in size and the style is different also.
New members of the paper staff now know what journalism is all about. Late hours and endless run- ning round to gather news articles has given the members the experi- ence needed to put out a better newspaper.
Photo-Journalism
Photo-Journalism is a new class at BSHS. With the aid of Mr. Con- ner, the class instructor, the stu- dents develop their skills in taking and printing pictures and work on various publications including the Golden Link, the Monitor, and an occasional page in the Sun entitled "Baron Country". Mrs. Talley helps the fifth period class in proofread- ing and copy work.

First Year for Select Choir
"This choir has the potential to accomplish great feats if you'll only get to work!" These words of wis- dom from Miss Turner began the year for the new select choir, cho- sen this year by students' auditions. The choir presented their first per- formance at the Dec. S.P.T.A. They also traveled to the Junior High for a Christmas Assembly. Nine mem- bers participated in All Regional Chorus in February and a spring concert is in planning.
In this choir, as well as in the other periods of choir, an effort was made to teach students basic musical theory. This included not value, note reading, and sight- singing.

Will the real Bluestone band
please show up !
“Practice makes perfect — but not perfect attendance," seemed to be the motto of some members of the band. This year approximately forty people were enrolled in sixth period band. However, on the average, only eighteen or twenty showed up for half-time performances during the football season or for the marching in Emporia's Annual Peanut Festival Parade or the Christmas Parades in South Boston and Clarksville.
The band did try to boost school spirit by playing at the pep rallies, but performances outside of school showed that the band members were the ones who needed a boost.
Those band members who did show up to perform worried about being able to make a good showing with such a small number. But band Director, W. D. Conner, always told them to play strongly and to be proud of what they were, because if they did their best, no more and no less, no one could criticize them. After these words of encouragment would come a joke to close the conversation. It would happen that way every time, for that was Mr. Conner, finishing up everything on a note of laughter . . .

Off with the old — On with the new
After five years, the majorettes decided it was time to change from sequins to something new and modern. The money to buy new uniforms, was raised by selling Pizza Hut calendars. But the uniforms may be hung up in two years, because this year they consisted of three seniors, two juniors, and only one sophomore. With no one interested in trying out or going to majorette camp, the word "majorette” may become extinct.

Football practice for the 1976 Bluestone Barons began on August 10. After several weeks of practicing at night, the team went to Fort Pickett where they practiced twice a day and scrimmaged against Halifax. At Fort Pickett the team developed strong bonds of friendship and loyalty which helped the team throughout the sea- son.
Bluestone's football team in 1976 compiled one of the best records ever in the school's history. The Barons won six games, lost two and tied one in their attempt to win the district championship. The Barons played well all year and their fans welcomed a winning season.

Leadership-on and off the field

Leadership is a very important, but often unseen, aspect that is involved with any winning football team. The source of leadership for the Barons in 1976 came from three places, and these sources, which did not fail the team during the season, led the Barons to their victories.
The first source of leadership came from the coaches, and the players discovered it as soon as practice began in August. Head coach Donnie Crowd- er and his assistants Bill Bowles and Lindell Palmer continued to give the players knowledge about their positions as the season progressed. Each of these coaches gave individual attention and lots of encour- agement to the players all year.
Second in command for the Barons were the tri- captains who showed their leadership on the field. At Fort Pickett the team elected Terry Ligon, Charles Yuille and Hunter Wagstaff to represent the team as their leaders on the field. Each week two of these young men went out for the coin toss and all three made on the field decisions for the Barons this year.
Along with the tri-captains the other members of the team also furnished leadership in the form of individual play. Their individual play was so good this season that eleven Barons made the all-district team. The players combined individual play and teamwork for a winning year.
Football coaches for 1976 were Lindell Palmer, Bill Bowles and Donnie Crowder.
Part of a coach's responsibility is to help players adjust their equipment as shown by Coach Crowder as he pumps up Jimmy's helmet.
Tri-captains — Terry Ligon, Hunter Wagstaff and Charles Yuille — supplied leadership for the Barons this year.

Without a defense to stop the opponents, no team can expect to win many ball games. Even though they lost two games, the Barons' defense definitely stop- ped their opponents this year. As a result of great defensive play the Barons allowed only 47 points to be scored by their opponents.
The defense in 1976 was perhaps one of the finest in Bluestone history. They had five shutouts and allowed an average of 5.2 points per game. Because of the five man line and two linebackers that Bluestone used this year, no team could run extremely well on them.
If the run ever passed the line of scrimmage, the secondary would close off the running lanes. Though they came up quickly on the run, their first respon- sibility was the pass. Bluestone's pass defense had one man cover one area, and they worked together per- fectly to stop passes. The secondary covered the field so well that no long passes were completed against them.
While stopping the pass, the Barons intercepted a total of eleven passes. Charles Yuille and Hunter Wagstaff each had four interceptions to lead the team.
“Bending but not breaking" was used many times this year to describe the Barons' defense. This meant that they allowed their opponents some yardage but stopped them short of scoring.
"Punkin" Yuille raised his arms in victory after Bluestone's Andy Nelson recovered a fumble against Brunswick.
36 Football
Offense shows more consistency
Wingback Hunter Wagstaff makes his second reception of the night against Matoaca.
Charles Yuille and John Shelton show the third part of the triple option which usually works for a big gain.
The Baron's offense showed more consistency and rushing power this year than in past years, but they still used the pass effectively to win some games. The team played a ball control type of game during the times they had the lead, and at other times their triple option offense broke to the outside for a big gain.
The passing attack complimented the running game because whenever the defense pulled in tight expecting the run, the offense could pass it over their heads. This year the Barons threw many passes off the same backfield action as when they ran the ball. This action must have confused many of the defen- sive secondaries in the district because they allowed the Barons to pass for approximately 700 yards. The Barons averaged nearly 20 yards per catch with the longest pass going for 60 yards. Jimmy Clark led the team in receptions with 17 grabs from his split-end position.
Along with the necessary passing game, the Barons usually rushed for an average of 185 yards per game. This running attack gave the team control of the ball, and ball control wins games. Many long runs to the outside, combined with the short plunges up the middle, gave the Barons a running attack that no team in the district could stop consistently.
This grinding type of game plan allowed the team to gain over 1600 yards on the ground and a total offense of 2300 yards. The team averaged 5.8 yards on 279 carries with Robert Clark and John Shelton each rushing for over 500 yards.

The SC A sponsored Girls' Intramu- ral Basketball games were as exciting as ever. In these games it was class against class as well as team against team, so the emotions of players and spectators were high.
In the first game the Juniors edged out the sophomores in a well-played game.
As was expected, the Juniors met the Seniors head-on in the Champion- ship game, and the Seniors triumphed once again. The Juniors never had a chance with all the penalties dished out by the officials, who, as tradition goes, had been chosen to favor the Seniors.
All three teams had excellent po- tential; some remarkable shots were made. At times there was action both on the floor and in the air.
Everyone thought the games were a success and a very good way to get out of class.
Things get a little hectic with intramural ball.

Barons Reach For
District Title
The Baron Varsity Basketball team has played ex- tremely well so far this season. With a record of eight wins and one loss, they have surprised a lot of people in the district this year. The most stunning victory of the season occurred when Bluestone defeated Brunswick in overtime. The Barons only loss came at the hands of Warrenton, but this was avenged when the Barons play- ed them for the second time.
After the break for Christmas holidays, several days were missed due to the bad weather conditions. As a result of this long period without practice the team came out shooting poorly and making numerous mis- takes. They had a confortable lead over Norlina, allowed them to pull it close at the end.
With more practice to get rid of the rusty spots and a few breaks the 1976-77 Barons may be able to win a district championship. The title which looked so far away at the beginning of the season could well be within the grasp of the Varsity team this year.

JV's play a wide open game.
A combination of determination, speed and height was used by the JV team to prove that they possessed the winning spirit. Their success followed much the same pattern as in the past seasons that William Bowles had coached. This success was attributed to many hours of hard practice and their will to win which Coach Bowles inspired in them. Their record so far this season totals eight wins and one loss.
The leading scorers were Willis Mull and Chris Wat- kins. Unselfishness made this team a scoring threat be- cause they would give up the ball to the open man. Their stingy defense often held the opponents to under 40 points.

The Bluestone Baronettes this year felt that their success was largely due to the fact they worked together as a team. They commented they felt like one big, happy family with Miss Hughey as the "mother of the team."
The Baronettes compiled a District Record of 11-1 and an overall record of 13-2 and won both the regular season and tournament records in the district.

O. B. Crowder, Bluestone's only coach for 19 years, retired after the '75-'76 base- ball season. Although his last team com- piled a less-than-impressive four and eight record, the team showed a noticeable im- provement both over the previous season and over their own season as it drew to an end. In only one respect could the season be called a total disappointment, and that was the fact that 0. B. Crowder's retire- ment came when he had a losing season.
The lowest spots of the season were a no-hitter against Park View and two other games where the opponents scored 14 and 25 runs. Other than these three games, the team played well. Central, Greensville and Brunswick fell victim to the better efforts and fewer errors of the team. Perhaps the best effort of the team came in a 4-2 loss to district champs Nottoway.
The team was led by the strong pitching of Duke Edmonds and the consistent hit- ting of William Oliver. Smart base running and stealing also helped the Barons in their four wins.
MVP Duke Edmonds takes another big cut for a base hit.
Sports 53
Track effort hampered by small squad
Lack of people and injuries proved to be hurting factors to the Barons track team's season. The Baron's had a record of 0-4, not a great record, but there were still some good individual performances by Larry Pulliam, John Shelton, Tony Mangum, and Robert Clark.
Larry Pulliam, with a record time of 4:32.6 in the mile, won every mile event in the district ex- cept one. John Shelton and Tony Mangum were very competitive in the Pole Vault event, with both men vaulting over 11 feet. Robert "Juice" Clark ran the 100-yard dash and the 220-yard dash and competed in the Regionals in both events.
All in all the track season was a success in many ways because all members participated with their hearts and souls.
Billy Smith shows good form as he goes over the hurdles.

The real juniors . . . gaining status
Helpful hints to make it through Junior year at Bluestone:
— Sell cookies.
— Wait for arrival of class rings.
— Make it through chemistry so you can go on to "greater things" — the fun class of physics.
— Take all the dot test such as PSAT-MNSQT, SAT, and SRA.
— Make plans for future.
— Plan the Prom.
— Look forward to being a Senior.
— Most of all — Keep up the Junior Spirit.
If you make it through most of the above, Junior year will be a breeze.

Power Mechanics . . .
>NA Co*OfnOHiN< SHOP
OR most commonly known by his students as Pixley's Speed Shop.
Power Mechanic students are small in number but in services performed they are large. The shop is busy daily with repair to farm tractors, student and teacher cars and general work that would be performed in any garage.
First year students spent their one period a day mostly with auto mechanic theory and classroom work. Second and Third year students spend two and three periods a day on practical work in the shop.
A new and larger shop is in the planning stage but yet to be built. With the new equip- ment purchased in the last two years, students are having trouble finding work space.

Cafeteria Workers and Custodians help in keeping the School and Students going
Ruth Sandifer heads a well staffed and more than capable group of women for the task of preparing food for the school.
Bluestone's Cafeteria Workers provide the daily nutrition re- quired for students. Not only are the workers good cooks, but the personalities of all of them make the atmosphere in the cafeteria more enjoyable.
TOP LEFT: Ruth Sandifer takes a break from the oven to smile for a picture. TOP RIGHT: Joanne Brankley, Iva Carter and Nell Glass working on the days menu. BOTTOM LEFT: Mabel Pulliam prepares for a daily meal. BOTTOM RIGHT: Blair Stephens and Catherine

The Custodians at Bluestone have a full schedule keeping the grounds of the school presentable, not only to the students but the general public as well. Many hours after school are spent on these tasks.

Thus ends another day.
Producing the 1977 Golden Link was a huge, time consuming feat. To all who contributed to the production of the Golden Link goes a sincere thank you. We offer special appreciations to the following.
To Mrs. Nancy Talley and Mrs. Merry Simmons who read copy, gave suggestions for improvements, and proofread pages before dead- lines.
To Members of the faculty and administration who spotted names and faces and who so patiently tolerated the interruptions and inconveniences we caused them.
To the Sun, Mecklenburg News, Chase City Progress, and the South Hill Enterprise for pictures.
To the Photo-Journalism classes and Mr. Conner for pictures.
To Max Ward and Delmar Studio for their advice and helpfulness.
To our advertisers who took time from their business work to talk to us, and without whose aid we could not have published the book.
